Israel at 59: Playing with Fire, photograph by Joshua Miller.

A man shows off his fire-spinning skills in an impromptu performance at a large street party in Tel Aviv, Israel on Yom Ha’atzmaout, Israeli Independence Day. Thousands of people descended on Florentin Street in southern Tel Aviv for a boisterous party in the street that pulsed on, techno music thumping, until the early hours of the morning. All over Israel people celebrate that their country, against all odds, has survived — and prospered — for 59 years.

Faqu’a, a village with about 3,200 residents, is located in the northeast corner of the West Bank. (For a larger version of this photo, click here. At the Old City of Acre, a fisherman ties a lure on his line as a little boy looks on. Tourists mingle at the port in the background as two kids play in the water.

The Old City of Acre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. UNESCO’s description of Acre:

Acre is a historic walled port-city with continuous settlement from the Phoenician period. The present city is characteristic of a fortified town dating from the Ottoman 18th and 19th centuries, with typical urban components such as the citadel, mosques, khans and baths. The remains of the Crusader town, dating from 1104 to 1291, lie almost intact, both above and below today’s street level, providing an exceptional picture of the layout and structures of the capital of the medieval Crusader kingdom of Jerusalem.

In Acre there is also an outdoor market with vendors selling everything from toy guns to goats’ heads. For a photo of the market butcher shop, goats heads and all, click “more.”

The going price for a goat’s head was 39 Shekels (a little less than $10).
